As today's market economy grows, both heavy and light industries are making clear progress. As a result, environmental quality is declining due to the emissions continuously released by factories and plants during operation. So how should exhaust gas be treated? Which technologies and treatment processes are suitable and meet the discharge standards of the environmental protection law?

Hop Nhat, an environmental company specializing in exhaust gas treatment services, presents to readers and clients some of the best exhaust gas treatment technologies and methods available today.

Exhaust Gas Treatment

1. Exhaust gas treatment technologies

Depending on the characteristics of each industry, the emissions released into the environment have different properties and compositions. In industry, common substances include CO2, SO2, H2S, etc., and fly ash from fuel combustion in facilities such as coal-fired furnaces, brick kilns, cement production and thermal power plants...

Not only around the world but also in Vietnam, a number of advanced technologies are in operation, such as:

1.1. Gas scrubbing tower

It consists of a hollow circular or rectangular chamber containing a bed of porous packing material (usually ceramic, non-ferrous metal, plastic, etc.) inside, which is continuously sprayed with water during operation.

Operating principle: The exhaust gas flows upward through the porous packing; solid pollutants that come into contact with the wet surfaces are captured, washed down into the collection tank and periodically discharged as sludge, while the clean gas exits.
Disadvantage: this treatment technique is rarely used at high gas velocities because water tends to be blown back up and overflow into the clean gas outlet.

1.2. Adsorption tower

This is a gas separation method based on adsorption by certain adsorbents. During operation, polluting gas molecules are retained when they come into contact with the surface of the adsorbent material. The adsorption tower is one of the exhaust gas treatment towers widely used to dehumidify and deodorize exhaust gas, remove toxic gases, recover vapors, etc.

Advantage: Relatively low installation cost.

1.3. Thermal treatment tower

A thermal exhaust gas treatment tower uses the heating method, also known as incineration, burning the gas with a direct flame in the stack or in a separate combustion chamber. This treatment process is considered one of the safest and most effective methods.

So why is this treatment method used? It is based on the characteristics of the main components in most types of exhaust gas. These substances are usually odorous, oxidizable or flammable, and after reacting with oxygen they become much less odorous. However, the investment and operating costs of this technology are higher than those of other technologies.

Besides the above exhaust gas treatment methods and technologies, there are also other exhaust gas treatment technologies on the market today, such as:

  • Treatment by incineration.
  • Treatment by biofiltration.
  • Treatment by electrostatic precipitation.
  • Treatment by absorption.

2. Why do you need exhaust gas treatment?

Air pollution is a direct cause of respiratory diseases, infectious diseases and cancer, and directly affects the environment and people's quality of life. Exhaust gas treatment is therefore one of the most necessary and urgent requirements today that organizations and authorities must address and find solutions for.

Environment, emissions and people form a closed, closely interconnected cycle, and this is a top threat for which scientists are seeking more effective solutions. According to the latest research from the US-based Environmental Performance Index (EPI), Vietnam ranks among the top 10 countries with the worst air pollution in Asia. In 2016, GreenID published a brief report on the environmental situation in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi as follows:

  • Hanoi: The average AQI is 121; the PM2.5 concentration is 50.5, double the national standard (25 µg/m3) and five times the WHO recommendation (10 µg/m3).
  • Ho Chi Minh City: The average AQI is 86; the PM2.5 concentration is 28.3, higher than the national standard and three times the WHO recommendation.

Another issue we need to address is limiting the amount of emissions released into the environment every day. With advances in science and technology, many new and more modern exhaust gas treatment systems have been invented and are delivering remarkable results.

United Construction and Environment Technology Joint Stock Company specializes in the design, construction and installation of high-standard exhaust gas treatment systems. We have completed many exhaust gas treatment projects, such as exhaust gas treatment systems for an electrical cable factory, an animal feed manufacturer, a packaging manufacturer, an elastic band manufacturer, a food manufacturer, etc.
